A Legend Gone, But Never Forgotten

Ernie Smith

The voice behind “Life Is Just for Living”, Ernie Smith, has passed away at the age of 80.

Born Glenroy Anthony Michael Archangelo Smith in Kingston, Jamaica, the iconic singer-songwriter died on April 16, 2026, at the University of Miami Hospital following complications from surgery. He was just two weeks away from his 81st birthday.

Ernie Smith wasn’t just an artist — he was a soundtrack to generations. A pioneer of Jamaica’s easy-listening reggae style, his rich baritone voice and storytelling set him apart in an era full of legends.

Timeless classics include:

  • Life Is Just for Living (1972 Yamaha Music Festival winner 🇯🇵)
  • Duppy or Gunman
  • Pitta Patta
  • Bend Down

His wife, Claudette Bailey-Smith, confirmed he had been hospitalized since April 7. Tributes continue to pour in across the island, with Olivia Grange describing him as a “musical giant” and a pillar of Jamaican culture.
